Tour of Osaka Traditional Crafts (1)

I am usually interested in exchanging information with manufacturing companies in various fields, regardless of the knife industry.
In the midst of all this, I received an invitation through the Sakai Cutlery Associations to participate in a tour of the production area organized by the “Osaka Traditional Crafts Industry Promotion Council” and decided to attend.

大阪伝統工芸品 産地見学会 (1)

普段から、包丁業界に関わらず、色んな分野のモノづくり企業の方と情報交換をしたいと思っています。
そんな中、今回堺の刃物組合を通じて『大阪伝統工芸品産業振興協議会』の主催する産地見学会の案内があったので、参加することにしました。

The first company was a manufacturer of prayer beads.
This company has been in business for about 160 years, and although I thought our company (90 years old) was one of the oldest, it is nothing compared to that.

It was heartening to see how the company continues to make beads, a very traditional product, by hand in a magnificent building in the center of Osaka City.

Although most of the processes are done by hand, the twisting of threads and making tassels are being mechanized, and the precision of the machines was also remarkable.

His son, who is now the ninth generation, used to work for Toyota Motor Corporation, and he is using his experience there to improve the company.

一軒目は、数珠のメーカーさんでした。
創業はなんと約160年、弊社(90年)も古い方だと思っていましたが、その比ではありません。

数珠という、かなり伝統的な製品を主力に据えつつ、今なお大阪市の中心部にある立派な建物の中で、手作業による地道なモノづくりを続けている様子には、心を打たれるものがありました。

ほとんどの工程が手作業ではありますが、その中でも、糸を撚（よ）ったり、房を作ったりする作業は機械化を進めておられ、その機械の緻密な動きもまた、目を見張るものがありました。

現在の九代目にあたるご子息は、以前トヨタ自動車にお勤めだったらしく、そこでの経験を活かして会社の改善に取り組まれているとのことでした。
