革サヤの改良 (4)

スタッフの仕事を常々うらやましく感じてくれていたというお母さんに、何らかの仕事をお願いすることを考えました。

At first we asked her to help us with the handle installation, but now she is mainly helping us with the production of these leather sheath.

This staff member, her daughter, has been diligently traveling back and forth to her parents’ house to deliver materials and collect finished products.

From what we have heard, it seems that she really enjoys this work, which makes us very happy as a client.

By the way, this leather sheath does not have a pin (to prevent the knife from falling out), but instead has a part (we call it a pillow) that fits in the space where the knife will be when it is in place.

When a knife is inserted, force is applied from both sides to bend the leather to create a gap, and after the knife is inserted, the gap closes when the hand is released.

最初は柄挿げの作業をお願いしていたのですが、今では専らこの革サヤの製作を手伝って下さっています。
その娘さんであるこのスタッフが、材料を届けたり完成品を回収したり、せっせと実家を行き来してくれています。

話を聞く限り、ご本人はこの作業を本当に楽しんで下さっているようなので、依頼している僕達としても本当に嬉しい限りです。

ちなみにこの革サヤには、（包丁の抜け防止の）ピンはつけておらず、その代わりに包丁が収まった時の隙間にフィットするようなパーツ（僕達は枕と呼んでいます）を取り付けています。

包丁を入れる場合は、両側から力を加えて革をたわませて隙間を作り、包丁を奥まで収めた後は、手を離すとたわみがなくなって隙間が閉じるという仕組みです。
