“Kiri-mei” by young staff (1)

In the traditional “Sakai knife making by division of labor system”, one of the jobs of a company called “wholesaler”, to which we belong and which is responsible for the final process after the handle insertion, is the process of kiri-mei (engraving letters with chisel).

Comparing “writing characters” and “kiri-mei”, the tools and actions used are completely different, but both share the same sense of how each stroke should be placed.

若手スタッフによる切銘 (1)

従来の『分業制による堺の包丁作り』において、柄挿げ以降の最終工程を担い、弊社が属し『問屋』と呼ばれる企業の仕事のうちの一つとして、タガネで文字を掘る『切銘』という作業があります。

『字を書くこと』と『切銘をすること』を比較すると、使う道具も作業時の動作も全く違いますが、どちらも一画一画をどのように配置するかのセンスがそのまま表れるという点では共通しています。

Therefore, I personally feel that “those who are good at writing characters are also good at kiri-mei.

Until now, my father has been the main person doing this work, but due to his advanced age, his accuracy is gradually declining.

(I used to do this myself for a while, but to be honest, I rarely do it these days, as I find it difficult to concentrate when the volume increases and I want to spend more time on other tasks).

In this context, I was a little concerned from the beginning about the beautiful handwriting of the female staff who joined our company 10 years ago.

そのため、個人的には『字が上手な人は切銘も上手である』と感じています。

これまでは父親がメインでこの作業をしておりましたが、高齢ということもあり少しずつ精度が落ちてきています。
（僕自身も一時期この作業をしていたのですが、数量が増えると集中力が続かなくなったり、他の仕事にもっと時間を使いたくなったことにより、正直な所、最近はほとんどこの作業をしていません）

そんな中、10年前に入社した女性スタッフの字のキレイさには、当初から少し気になっていました。
